How each week works
- Weekdays: 30 to 60 minutes. Read one topic and its guideline.
- Weekends: one timed 50 question practice exam. From week 3 through week 10, take the exams in order and review every miss. By week 10 you have taken all 10 exams, 500 questions.
- Every question: know why the right answer is right and why each wrong answer is wrong.
- Keep a miss log: one line per miss with the concept, not the question. Reread it every weekend.

Frequently asked questions
How long should I study for the OCS?
Most people study for 3 to 6 months, about 6 to 10 hours a week. Start earlier if you qualified through clinical hours in a narrow setting or have been out of a region for a while.
When should I start studying for the spring 2027 OCS?
The testing window opens February 24, 2027. For the 6 month plan, start by late August. For the 12 week plan, start by December 2, 2026. Short on time? The 6 week plan starts January 13.
How many practice questions should I do?
Quality beats volume. Aim for steady daily sets you fully review, plus at least three full timed 50 question blocks in the last month. Reading every explanation matters more than hitting a number.
What should I study first for the OCS?
Weight your time like the ABPTS outline. Lumbar spine, shoulder, knee and cervical spine make up over half the exam, so they get the most weeks.
Is a 6 week plan enough?
It can work if you already practice across most regions. Compress the plan by pairing regions each week, and keep the timed blocks in the final two weeks.
A practice exam for every weekend
Ten 50 question exams, the size of one real block, with a 90 minute pace timer, flag for review and a score by body region. They line up with this plan, one per weekend.
Body region weights are from the ABPTS orthopaedics content outline, which ABPTS notes only approximates the actual exam. Pass the OCS is not affiliated with ABPTS.
